How to get a Domain for your website

Updated: Sep 13, 2018

So you want to build a website? That’s great! But first, you need to know where to start. Building a website can sometimes be overwhelming but one of the very first things that you need to understand is what will your URL be? You domain is essentially the “name” of your website, and the main key to how your website visitors will get to your site. By the end of this blog post, you will be a pro when it comes to finding your domain for your Wix website and to start growing your business like a PRO!

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

First things first, you have to do your research! I know you may have such a brilliant idea for your business name, but guests what, so do millions of other people! It’s a big world out there, so you need to make sure that your idea is your own and that your idea is unique!

I recommend going to GoDaddy.com to do some research on your domain to make sure that no one already has your name idea. On the home page, you will see a "search domain" toolbar where you will be able to check and see if your name is available. If it is not available, Go Daddy offers a service in which you can pay someone for their Domain if they already own it, but be careful, this can be pretty expensive.

I also recommend that you stick with a “.com” extension instead of a “.org” or any other extensions. You want to be sure that your online presence is as unique and as professional as possible

2. CLAIM YOUR DOMAIN

So you’ve found a domain that is available? Congrats! The next thing that you need to do is claim your domain! If you do not have a Wix account yet, no worries, you can purchase your domain name straight from Go Daddy. Also, remember, purchasing a domain does cost money, and you want to be sure that you constantly keep up to date with your payments, because you don’t want anyone to end up stealing your domain!

A major horror story about someone stealing another’s Domain is from the recent 2016 campaign primary election. Donald Trump ended up buying Jeb Bush’s domain because his team didn’t keep up with his domain expiration date. Ultimately Donald Trump purchased JebBush.com and ending up ended up linking the domain directly to Donald Trump’s website. Yikes! Don’t let this be you!

Also, to purchase a Domain, it is relatively, inexpensive. It cost about $20 per year, which I think is very reasonable. It does end up costing less if you purchase a bundle deal of multiple years at one time.

3. LINK YOUR DOMAIN TO YOUR WEBSITE.

Last but not least, it’s not time to link your domain to your website! If you don’t actually have a website created, that’s ok, you can let your domain sit until you’re actually ready to have your website connected.

If you do have a website, Wix allows you to easily transfer your domain name straight from Go Daddy, or even better, you can buy and connect a domain straight from Wix! It really is that easy!

So if you ever have any more questions on what is one of the first steps to starting an online business, this is one of them. Purchase your domain and make sure that you own the rights to your domain for as long as you need it!

And just like that, you are ready to start your new website! Wix offers many tools to help you link your domain to your website, so if you need any help, make sure to check out the resources in the Help Center.
